No Ghost Just a Shell
Pierre Huyghe & Philippe Parreno
In 1999 Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno acquired the rights to a Japanese design character from a company specialized in the fabrication of Manga characters, a character that Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno wanted to free from the industry that created her. Ann Lee didn’t have a name when they bought her. She had nothing but a visual summary of her identity. But she already had a story, the story of a sign. This is the story which drew up the synopsis of the project No Ghost Just a Shell. The first two episodes - anywhere out of the world (Parreno) and two minutes out of your time (Huyghe), two parts of 4 minutes each - make up a prologue to a series of films by different directors. Each film is part of a contemporary tale in which a sign attracts a host of directors before gaining its freedom. The original character finally vanished, taking her copyright with her. The series is now part of the Tate Modern collection.
